School Sport Survey – Have you used it? What’s next?

Dr Rachel Hughes is Head of Research at Sport Wales and has overseen the success of the largest ever survey of young people and sport ever undertaken in the UK.

The Sport Wales School Sport Survey saw nearly 110,000 young people in Wales give their views in sport. But after the fanfare of data announcement, what has happened with the data and what could come next.

Dr Hughes explains…

After months of number crunching, the new year has finally brought a time for reflection on what we achieved in 2013. What the sport and education sectors achieved during that survey provides a benchmark and a base for planning sport for a generation.

Having a war chest of stats is all well and good, but the numbers on paper are only as useful as how they get used to influence the numbers of young people on our playing fields.

We know the survey data is already making a difference. Schools, governing bodies, local authorities and other organisations are already influencing sport positively. Sport Wales has also used the data to get a seat at the table of discussions with politicians and other opinion formers (see a short film clip of examples here).

I was pleased to hear of how a local authority, school and community club are all linking up for mutual benefit.

Inspire (Blaenau Gwent Sports Development) and Brynmawr Foundation School analysed the results of the School Sport Survey and found that gymnastics ranked third for latent demand in sports amongst girls. 28% of girls in years 7 to 11 would like to take part in more gymnastics. Gymnastics is offered through the PE curriculum and the school have entered numerous gymnastics competitions over the years but there is no exit route into a club within the community.

Inspire approached Valleys Gymnastics Academy to find out if there would be scope to run satellite sessions within this community. VGA were approached because they currently run satellite sessions in Blaenau Gwent from Tredegar Sports Centre, Ebbw Vale Sports Centre and Abertillery Comprehensive School. Brynmawr Foundation School offered the use of their facilities to VGA for gymnastics sessions, and they are now set to deliver three gymnastics sessions per week. Sessions will commence in March.

Moving forward, the sheer scale of the data and information we have now in Wales is something that we must try and consolidate. We work in sport so our challenge is always to get better and improve our performance.

We have a dream of a national census for sport for young people, but the next step has to be getting all schools on board with the survey.

We had more than half of schools in Wales take part and that’s a phenomenal achievement. We have even had schools phone us to ask if they can do the survey again this year. It goes to show that there is a very real appetite to listen to our young people.

For 2015, real progress will be getting schools leading the process. The survey has risen in profile in the education sector and has been endorsed by Estyn. The next challenge will be to raise its standing again.

There is the potential for us to do something internationally - an international school sport survey. We’ve been in contact with Canada, New Zealand and Australia. New Zealand have told us they are looking at our survey as one that is leading the way in sporting research for young people.

Imagine young people being to speak to their peers in a country such as Canada about sport. The potential is huge.

Our Irish colleagues came to Wales and were really interested in the process of how we went about it because there isn’t anything like it anywhere else.

The key point of learning they were able to take away was the collaboration. Collaboration is the vital element because you can take the process - and the IT tool and the other technical aspects - but unless you’ve got the culture of teamwork it won’t happen. Partner buy-in is the major factor for them to them if they want to try and replicate what we have achieved in Wales.

I think it is a reflection of everyone who was involved in the School Sport Survey project that we are being held up as good practice in other countries. Everyone is looking at us and thinking ‘we haven’t got that’. No one else has got young people’s sport data like this. Young people in Wales have told us what they’re doing and what they want to do and it’s up to all of us to use this data to shape what is being offered, how it’s being delivered, because ultimately we want to see every child hooked on sport for life

An additional spin-off is that we are now looking to develop a segmentation of young people, which has not been done anywhere before, but that’s because we’ve got such good data. This segmentation tool will be very applied and will provide a more rounded understanding of the types of young people that exist in any particular geography. Using this insight will ensure that we’re tailoring opportunities accordingly

Ar ôl misoedd o drin rhifau, mae’r flwyddyn newydd yn gyfle i ni edrych yn ôl ar yr hyn a gyflawnwyd gennym yn 2013. Mae’r hyn a gyflawnwyd gan y sectorau chwaraeon ac addysg yn ystod yr arolwg yma’n darparu meincnod a sylfaen ar gyfer cynllunio chwaraeon am genhedlaeth.

Mae cael cist fawr o ystadegau’n grêt, ond ’dyw’r rhifau ar bapur yn dda i ddim os nad ydyn nhw’n cael eu defnyddio i ddylanwadu ar nifer y bobl ifanc ar ein meysydd chwarae ni.

Rydyn ni’n gwybod bod data’r arolwg yn gwneud gwahaniaeth eisoes. Mae ysgolion, cyrff rheoli, awdurdodau lleol a sefydliadau eraill eisoes yn dylanwadu ar chwaraeon mewn ffordd gadarnhaol. Hefyd, mae Chwaraeon Cymru wedi defnyddio’r data i gael sedd wrth fwrdd trafodaeth gyda gwleidyddion ac eraill sy’n mynegi barn (cyfle i weld ffilm fer o enghreifftiau yma).

Roeddwn i’n falch o glywed am awdurdod lleol, ysgol a chlwb cymunedol yn dod at ei gilydd i gyd er lles pawb.

Dadansoddodd Inspire (Adran Datblygu Chwaraeon Blaenau Gwent) ac Ysgol Sylfaen Brynmawr ganlyniadau’r Arolwg ar Chwaraeon Ysgol a gweld bod gymnasteg yn y trydydd safle o ran y galw cudd mewn chwaraeon ymhlith y merched. Fe hoffai 28% o’r merched ym mlynyddoedd 7 i 11 gymryd rhan mewn mwy o gymnasteg. Mae gymnasteg yn cael ei gynnig fel rhan o’r cwricwlwm Addysg Gorfforol ac mae’r ysgol wedi cymryd rhan mewn nifer o gystadlaethau gymnasteg dros y blynyddoedd, ond does dim llwybr cynnydd i glwb yn y gymuned.

Aeth Inspire ati i holi’r Valley Gymnastics Academy, i weld a fyddai posib cynnal sesiynau lloeren yn y gymuned hon. Holwyd VGA am eu bod eisoes yn cynnal sesiynau lloeren ym Mlaenau Gwent o Ganolfan Chwaraeon Tredegar, Canolfan Chwaraeon Glynebwy ac Ysgol Gyfun Abertileri. Cynigiodd Ysgol Sylfaen Brynmawr ddefnydd o’i chyfleusterau i VGA ar gyfer sesiynau gymnasteg a nawr maent yn barod i gyflwyno tri sesiwn gymnasteg yr wythnos. Bydd y sesiynau’n dechrau ym mis Mawrth.

Wrth symud ymlaen, mae graddfa enfawr y data a’r wybodaeth sydd gennym ni yng Nghymru yn awr yn rhywbeth y mae’n rhaid i ni geisio ei ddatblygu. Rydyn ni’n gweithio ym maes chwaraeon ac felly ein her ni bob amser yw datblygu a gwella ein perfformiad.

Mae gennym freuddwyd am gyfrifiad chwaraeon cenedlaethol ar gyfer pobl ifanc, ond y cam nesaf yw cael yr holl ysgolion yn rhan o’r arolwg.

Cymerodd mwy na hanner yr ysgolion yng Nghymru ran yn yr arolwg ac mae hwn yn gyflawniad aruthrol. Rydyn ni hyd yn oed wedi cael ysgolion yn ein ffonio ni i ofyn oes posib iddyn nhw wneud yr arolwg eto eleni. Mae hyn yn dangos bod dyhead mawr i wrando ar ein pobl ifanc ni.

Ar gyfer 2015, y gwir gynnydd fydd cael yr ysgolion i arwain y broses. Mae proffil yr arolwg wedi codi yn y sector addysg ac mae wedi cael ei gymeradwyo gan Estyn. Yr her nesaf fydd ei wneud yn fwy uchel fyth ei barch.

Mae potensial i ni wneud rhywbeth yn rhyngwladol – arolwg rhyngwladol ar chwaraeon ysgol. Rydyn ni wedi cysylltu â Chanada, Seland Newydd ac Awstralia. Mae Seland Newydd wedi dweud wrthyn ni eu bod yn edrych ar ein harolwg ni fel un sy’n arwain y ffordd ym maes ymchwil chwaraeon ar gyfer pobl ifanc.

Dychmygwch bobl ifanc yn gallu siarad gyda’u cyfoedion mewn gwlad fel Canada am chwaraeon. Mae’r potensial yn enfawr.

Daeth ein cydweithwyr ni yn Iwerddon i Gymru ac roedd ganddynt ddiddordeb mawr yn ein proses ni o sefydlu’r arolwg, oherwydd does dim byd tebyg iddo yn unrhyw le arall.

Y peth allweddol a ddysgwyd ganddyn nhw ar ôl ymweld â ni oedd cydweithredu. Cydweithredu yw’r elfen hanfodol oherwydd fe allwch chi sefydlu’r broses – a’r adnodd Technoleg Gwybodaeth a’r agweddau technegol eraill – ond oni bai fod gennych chi ddiwylliant o waith tîm, ni fydd unrhyw beth yn digwydd. Cefnogaeth partneriaid yw’r ffactor allweddol i bawb os ydyn nhw eisiau ceisio efelychu’r hyn rydyn ni wedi’i gyflawni yma yng Nghymru.

Rydw i’n credu ei fod yn adlewyrchiad o bawb a oedd yn ymwneud â phrosiect yr Arolwg ar Chwaraeon Ysgol ein bod yn cael ein hystyried fel arfer da i’w efelychu mewn gwledydd eraill. Mae pawb yn edrych arnom ni ac yn meddwl ‘does gennym ni ddim byd fel yna’. Does gan neb arall ddata chwaraeon am bobl ifanc fel sydd gennym ni. Mae pobl ifanc yng Nghymru wedi dweud wrthym ni beth maen nhw’n ei wneud a beth maen nhw eisiau ei wneud a nawr, ein cyfrifoldeb ni i gyd yw defnyddio’r data yma i ddylanwadu ar yr hyn sy’n cael ei gynnig a sut mae’n cael ei gyflwyno, oherwydd yn y pen draw, rydyn ni eisiau gweld pob plentyn wedi gwirioni ar chwaraeon am oes.

Un elfen ychwanegol yn awr yw ein bod ni eisiau segmentu pobl ifanc ac nid yw hynny wedi cael ei wneud yn unrhyw le arall o’r blaen. Y rheswm am hyn yw am fod gennym ni ddata sydd mor dda. Bydd yr adnodd segmentu’n un cymhwysol iawn a bydd yn darparu dealltwriaeth fanylach o’r mathau o bobl ifanc sy’n bodoli mewn ardaloedd daearyddol penodol. Bydd defnyddio’r wybodaeth hon yn sicrhau ein bod yn addasu’r cyfleoedd yn unol â hynny.

I gael rhagor o wybodaeth, ewch i www.schoolsportsurvey.org.uk
